I enjoyed the characters in this book--they were all well drawn and distinctive. Molly, the young constable, is great. She's still new, still green, and still unsure of herself, yet she is able to stand up for herself, and she does her job well. She has a lot of inner strength and determination, as well as compassion and empathy....she'll make a great cop. Her parents are all well-drawn; aging hippies from the Peace Generation, they are outraged by her choice of careers, yet still love her dearly, and show it. You can see her parents starting to drift apart--her mother is still politically active, ready to join a protest for any cause, while Molly's father is beooming less interested in politics and protests, and more interested in making a living. John, the chief detective who becomes Molly's mentor, is wonderfully complex; he doesn't really want the rookie, yet is an excellent teacher. He reams her out when she makes a mistake, then proceeds to patiently teach her the job again. This is one mystery series where I will look forward to the next book.

A good plot, though the reasons given for the stalking are pretty weak, and much of the plot evolves around that. I find the character of Molly (Moonlight) off kilter. To be a police officer, surely she would need to have more self confidence and savvy. Also her sergeant seems to be unnaturally grouchy with her. Surely a man on the force as long as he would have dealt with rookies before. In fact, all the characters seemed to behave in unrealistic manners. I hope she develops her characters better as the series continues, as it has a lot of promise.
Constable Molly is young and inexperienced. She was raised by hippies and yet she's driven to become a police officer and hunt down a murder. This story doesnt go where either you or Molly expect but it's a journey to build a young officer into a detective. The characters are delightful and relatable.
i really loved the book..
The storyline is interesting in this book, however there are many odd sentences. The author throws in some gratuitous sexual remarks and language at moments in the book where they are unnecessary and inappropriate. This is coupled with many editorial errors Improper sentence structure, fragmented sentences, misspelled words, and even word confusion (for instance the author uses parental grandfather instead of paternal when referencing the character's grandfather on her father's side of the family, there are several other word confusions).
I enjoyed this bit of reading. Milky was fun, complex and REAL! Going through much of what many of us have personal grief, change of career, adult children living at home, realizing your parents' relationship as humans and not as parents. I look forward to another Molly Smith book.
I really enjoyed this first in the series. Although the main character, Molly, comes off as a bit young, she has strong convictions and the reader can relate to her desire to do well in her new job. Plus, that leaves room for her to grow as a character. Secondary characters are believable and add to the obstacles Molly faces. I look forward to reading more in the series!
Constable Molly Smith, a recent recruit in the police department of the town she grew up in, discovers a dead body while walking her beat. She's pulled into the investigation, but the sergeant in charge of the case doesn't want her because she's too green. The victim was a property developer, and there is a lot of opposition to the project. With that and another controversy over a town memorial, there's no end to the list of suspects.
