False Friends and Other Cognates Mia Franco Books
I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I learned about the challenges a nanny encounters going to a foreign country to live with a family she doesn't know and take care of children she has never met, all while struggling with learning a foreign language. The story is informative, and funny. The friends the nanny makes during her journey are diverse and each one she meets has a lasting impact on her. I also liked the mini French lessons scattered through the story.

False Friends and Other Cognates Mia Franco Books Reviews
False Friends (and other cognates) is one of the most unique stories I have been fortunate to read. The story isn't this extreme and dramatic tale of a perfect girl conquering all before her flawlessly, it shows bumps in the road, real emotions and reactions, and the importance of hard work. I, a 20 year old male, related to this Ali character, because her thoughts-which were so unique and funny-seemed to transcend gender and apply to any young adult. I hope this story is the trend, especially for young girls to read, because it's about empowerment, adventure, and self-worth. Something any young girl, or boy, should read, because not everything in life goes as planned, and if it doesn't, it's what you do afterwards that shows what kind of person you are.
You don't have to be a francophile to love this well wrought tale of an American teenager's summer adventure in Belgium and France. The novel's heroine, 17-year-old Ali (short for California), narrates her own coming-of-age story, taking us along for the ride as she manages the occasional thrills and daily humiliations of life as a well-to-do family's live-in nanny. Book smart but green and fluent only in English, the girl from El Paso continually finds herself in new places and situations where she's almost in over her head. But when she's challenged by the nuances of the French language--and body language--she calls on her resources, including her self-deprecating wit and the generosity of her new friends, to try to make sense of it all. It's a wild ride and a great read. Traveling with Ali on this journey filled with new discoveries, including the handsome Etienne, has more than a few rewards.
