The book started out very gothic-like, with the heroine knocking on the hero's door at night as a last ditch effort to find help for her younger brother, who's in jail and wrongly accused of serial murder. From his very first appearance, the hero comes across as mysterious, dangerous, and powerful. The heroine, while down on her luck, is not yet out. She's full of spirit and sharp tounge, and though afraid of the hero, knows she has nowhere else to go. And so their partnership begins. As far as plot went, it's ok. There's a bit of mystery although some of it made no sense. The romance, however, was non-existent. The book was written in 3rd person, but the Author might as well had written it in 1st person as the entire book was told from the Heroine's perspective. As such, I never got to know the hero beyond the heroine's description and impression of him - which wasn't very flattering beyond physical descriptions. I didn't understand how she fell for him as, throughout the book, there wasn't much revealed about him. The hero remained secretive and mysterious almost to the very end. I know you can't control whom or when you love, but I'd think you'll at least learn a bit more about the person before you can move beyond initial attraction or lust. Then there's the Hero's treatment of the Heroine. Throughout the book, he holds all the power and he wields it ruthlessly towards the Heroine. He tells her what to do, how to dress, rarely speaks kindly to her, and though the heroine responds with anger from time to time, she generally does as she's told. He manipulates her with sex too, which I found distasteful.
Overall, not a good book.

Plot aside, the couple in this book have one of most heated physical relationship I've ever seen in writing. But the odd thing is even though the author was not one to explain every single detail about their liaisons, the intensity was still searing. I'm sure in strong part to how well she set up and described her characters and focused a lot on describing emotions in the eyes and physical reactions. Also how they seem to be closely matched in wit, if not in experience. This is definitely a couple you will not soon forget, no matter how many romance novels you read.
Plot-wise the subject matter is a bit dark, not many uppity Ton parties here, but it was very interesting how the author wove the past and present together to reveal the true reasons behind the brutal murders that the hero/heroine are trying to solve. And I truly never saw the end coming, which is great because no one wants to figure out the mystery in the middle of a good book.
All in all, well, well, well worth the read, and in my case, the re-reads too!
One of the reviewers got this right - forget the cover, and the title. These do not do justice to a story that was a ride from the word go - or rather from the moment Marietta first entered Gabriel's home - and that is by the 2nd% of the e-book. There was no stopping the hugely lovably and huggable Gabriel, love how Mariatta stood up to the many many challenges. The plot was so thick, but written so clearly and so <damn> so well written - i felt like i was on that roller-coaster ride with Gabriel, Marietta, Jeremy, John, Dresden..and whole host of well-formed characters - yes, even the villains. I could imagine the horrors facing them when they were at the murderer's lair. I Could Not put the book down, except to sleep and to work. It was THAT intriguing, enticing, and yes, even the love-making was satisfying because it lends credence to what these two were going through. Arrrgghh.
I was enchanted from the get-go. This isn't your garden variety rake-of-the-ton meets ingenue. Gabriel Noble is rich, to be sure, but his humble beginnings bar him from association with the upper crust, even with the likes of shunned and shamed family Winters. Well, except in the extreme circumstances that bring a desperate Marietta Winters to his doorstep in the middle of a cold London night.
Mr. Noble has a very useful skill set, you see. Think Sherlock Holmes meets The Godfather. He has an intricate network of contacts at all levels of London society based on a system of favors. One can an exorbitant monetary fee for his investigative services, or one can go into debt. Three favors - no limits. It's a hard bargain, but when Marietta's brother is accused of a Jack-the-Ripper-esque murder, she has no choice.
Rather than cash in right away, however, the clever and seductive Mr. Noble recruits her as his partner as he goes undercover in London's seedier side to track down the real killer, all the while working to seduce Marietta. The stakes escalate and become personal when it becomes clear that the killer is targeting women from Gabriel's own dark past.
This is a great read for angst junkies (looooooove the wounded hero), mystery lovers, and readers who like to take a step back in time. Thoroughly enjoyed and will be seeking more great reads from this author!
