Waking Kate eBook Sarah Addison Allen
This is the first time I've read something by this author. She does an excellent job with the overbearing mother-in-law, who's sole mission is to "help" Kate and her daughter pick up the pieces of their life and carry on.The author was able to pull me almost immediately into the story and made Kate both likable and relatable. Obviously this is a story about loss and the grief that comes with it. More importantly, it seems that it is going to be more about coming out of that dark place. Thus, waking up and moving forward.
I will absolutely be downloading this author's other work and am looking forward to reading about what comes next!

Waking Kate eBook Sarah Addison Allen Reviews
I didn't dislike this book, I'm a fan of Ms. Allen, but since I haven't read Lost Lake I didn't understand the premise. This is a short story so its a very quick read. Kate hears that one of the Men's stores in her town is closing and the sales associate they interview is one of her neighbors. On the spur of the moment she goes over to his home to express her sorrow that he lost his position. He tells her a story of how he ended up in his job. His story causes her to reflect on her life with her always busy husband.
That's it, I didn't get a lot out of this but when I get around to ordering Lost Lake, I'm sure it will have more impact with me.
Reading what I thought was another of Allen's amazing books, I was disappointed (understatement) that it ended after only one chapter. Is this a download error? It opened up all sorts of possibilities for interesting characters, only to go nowhere with them. This must be a tease. I can't imagine any other reason it is downloading this way and in reading other reviews this is the case for everyone who has downloaded this one chapter tease.
4 Stars
I found this free short story on and decided to read it prior to reading Lost Lake. The story is very short, 38 pages according to . The majority of the kindle book is a excerpt from Lost Lake.
In this short story we meet Kate and learn a bit about her marriage. She is intrigued by a TV news report she sees and believes that the elderly man looks familiar. She is surprised to find that man walking down her street and introduces herself to Mr. Donbeet. They have a conversation over a cup of butter coffee before Kate returns home.
I loved the writing in this story and it made me eager to read Lost Lake. I believe that this short story gives some insight to Kate's character but it is not necessary to read this piece to enjoy Lost Lake.
I would recommend this short story to anyone planning to read Lost Lake. I would also recommend this to anyone who is thinking about reading some of Sarah Addison Allen's work. It is a nice example of her style of writing. I have already read Lost Lake and plan to read additional titles by this wonderful author.
I have been in love with Sarah Addison Allen's work since her debut novel, Garden Spells. The themes of her books are not light, but somehow she writes the stories of her characters in mystical, whimsical, and magical ways. Her writing is just beautiful.
Waking Kate is a very short read, a prequel to the soon-to-be released Lost Lake. We meet Kate, a wife and mother who seems to be at a crossroads in her life. We don't really find out what that is, clearly something that will be revealed in Lost Lake. She seems to be unsettled, feeling in her heart and soul that life is what is seemed or maybe should be with her husband. She goes through a bit of a transformation during a conversation with an elderly neighbor, but, in true Allen style, we are left wondering about that conversation. Did it really take place or is it something she dreamed. A nice lead-in to the new book!
Things to love about Waking Kate...
--The magical style of writing. I love the somewhat otherworldly way that the author writes.
--A real character. Kate is a woman that I think many of us, as women, can recognize as ourselves at one point or another in our lives.
My recommendation A must read for fans of Sarah Addison Allen! It is free and it is short and a wonderful lead-in to the highly anticipated Lost Lake.
I was half-way through Lost Lake when I noted on GoodReads that there was a little prequel story. I trotted over to to download this freebie and plunged right in thinking I'd missed something I should have gotten before starting Lost Lake.
Much to my relief, Waking Kate actually worked better, I think, reading it after I started Lost Lake, because I think it made better sense to me that way. I knew who the characters were and their significance to the story coming right after it. I enjoyed it as a peek back into the past and I'm not sure it would have held much significance to me reading it before Lost Lake because it is a vignette- a snapshot in time- more than a fully developed story.
To summarize, I enjoyed this short piece, but it really did work better after at least getting a significant portion of the Lost Lake story first.
Waking Kate is fluffy and bittersweet, like a bite sized confection that whets the appetite. The story is a stand-alone prequel to the novel Lost Lake and introduces readers to one of the main characters, Kate. From my understanding it won’t bring anything new to the table for folks that have already read Lost Lake, but I found it an enjoyable read as someone new to Allen’s work.
While the book description sums up the plot quite well I was pleasantly surprised. The pacing of the story was perfect and had a dream-like quality from start to finish. I instantly adored kindly old Mr. Donbeet and I found myself relating more than I expected to Kate and her family.
Despite a few very small grammatical errors or oddly formed sentences, the writing was quite good. You get a sense of the scenery and the characters without getting bombarded with unnecessary descriptions which seems to be a common problem in a lot of books.
This little short was a wonderful introduction to Sarah Addison Allen and her style of magic blended with the beauty and comfort of the American South.
