Before She Ignites Fallen Isles Book 1 eBook Jodi Meadows
THE GOOD:-Mira. I like the main character. Author Francina Simone described her as a Hufflepuff and after reading the book myself. I agree. She's a passive character for a majority of the book and if i was raised the way her mom raised her, I'd probably be that way too. Her personality is to have concern for everyone else, before herself.
-The representation. Mira's black and she has anxiety. Now the book is not about this things, these are just character traits of the MC and it was done so well. I would have loved for this book to have come out when I was of the YA age, when I was still dealing with my own self hate. Having a character who looked like me, but the book was just about her adventures with dragons. I'm so down for that. Then with Ms. Meadows integrating Mira's anxiety without relying on stereotypes is also a breath of fresh air.
-Dragons. The book has dragons, I miss seeing dragons in literature. Nowadays it's all vampires and werewolves. Not that that's bad, I just miss other supernatural beings.
THE BAD:
-Slow Burn. This book is painfully slow. The intensity of the plot doesn't happen until 80% of the way through the book. When Mira finally decides she's had enough of the way she's being treated, the story is almost over.
-Dragons. Yes, this book has dragons and that's awesome, but they're rarely seen. You hear about the dragons more than you see them.
-The Prologue. People have a love/hate relationship with prologues. We all understand the point of them, but there are far too many times where they come off unnecessary and do more harm than good. I feel like in Before She Ignites, the prologue could have been nixed and the book would have remained the same. It was just going over the Mira Treaty, but I feel that could have been addressed within the story and without coming off as info dumping.
FINAL THOUGHTS:
I do plan on checking out the sequel to this and while it took me longer than usual to read the book, I did enjoy it. Now, I've seen some reviewers make the comment about how Mira is not a true black character, she's just a white character in blackface and this upsets me, because it dates back to my high school days where I got teased about not being black enough because of the things I liked and the way I spoke. Newsflash, there's no right way to be black, there's no way someone to not be black enough and we really need to move away from this narrative because it is harmful to not only the people it is spoken to, but to the movement of having more diversity in media.

Before She Ignites Fallen Isles Book 1 eBook Jodi Meadows Reviews
Thanks to the Goodreads Giveaway, I was able to read this book. Ever since I heard this book had a dragons involved I knew I had to get my hands on this book. Add to the fact that the main protagonist was black also made me want to read it more. Though it did make me pause because it wasn't written by a person of color. I have read her work before and have enjoyed them.
Honestly, this book was so good that even though I was hesitant on reading it I did find myself enjoying it. I did find some downsides to it obviously, but my overall rating is a 4/5 stars.
Let's start with what I didn't like about the book. Obviously the fact that it was written by a white woman was what made me not want to pick it up. The other thing I didn't like is the fact that almost all of the female characters had braids or some sort of twists in their hair. Don't know if this was intentional or what but I kind of found it irritating.
Now the things I did like This book was told mainly through Mira's point of view. I found myself relating to Mira in the sense that she often gets anxiety and panic attacks. Throughout this book we get to see how she deals with them and everyone knows, they can be very draining afterwards. Though she does end up exhausted she kept on going despite her situation. It also seemed like she had OCD since she counts everything and I mean it she counted everything.
Mira is sent to the Pit - a prison; which she spends a majority of the book in. She was sent there do to the fact that she found out something she wasn't supposed to. It all revolves around dragons.
I fell in love with the dragons in this book. Especially since Mira has her own dragon that she trains named LaLa. She is literally the cutest thing and I'm sad that we didn't get to see more of her. Hopefully the next book has even more dragons.
Idk what the 2 star people are complaining about, this book is awesome! Yes it's a slow burn and no you won't have allll the answers by the end but it's magnificently written with a refreshingly different protagonist. Thank you for telling Mira's story Jodi Meadows! I look forward to getting to know her better
I'd also like to say that I might have cried a little reading about someone that looks like me in a fantasy setting, that's not a side character. It might not be a big deal to most but representation matters. Thank you for such a beautiful story
I started reading this book on Thursday afternoon, and finished it Saturday morning, and I would have finished faster if I didn't have a 3.5 month old baby and have to seize sleep whenever I can! But that's neither here nor there.
I LOVE this world Jodi Meadows has created. It's deep and strange and interesting, and I can't wait to explore it further in books 2&3. Mira is a rich, wonderful character, and I was cheering for her from page one—she's flawed and real and she GROWS and learns and changes. I loved every single character, even the ones I hated. There's a glimmer of romance that's wonderfully understated, and I'm excited for more.
In any case, if you love rich fantasy worlds with world building that's important to the plot (!), dragons, flawed heroines coming into their own, and prison stories, you'll love this book.
